WordPress Accessibility Audit and Fixes (WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA)

We audit your WordPress site against WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA, fix the issues we find in the theme and plugins, and give you a draft accessibility statement.

  • Typical scope approx. 8 h
  • Roughly 400 € + VAT
  • Assessment and estimate are free

Accessibility problems are rarely one big bug. They are hundreds of small ones: a button that cannot be reached with the keyboard, light grey text on a white background, a form field without a label, an image without alt text. For a screen reader user, or anyone who does not use a mouse, that can mean an order cannot be completed. We audit the site, fix what we find and hand you a documented result.

This is technical work: we test and fix code and content structure. It is not legal advice. Whether and to what extent accessibility rules apply to your business is a question for a lawyer.

What the work includes

  • Automated checks. We run tools such as axe, WAVE and Lighthouse on the key templates: home page, category, product page, cart, checkout and contact form.
  • Manual testing. Automation only finds part of the problems, so we also go through the pages with the keyboard (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Esc) and, where needed, a screen reader.
  • Focus states. The active element must always be visible, the focus order logical, and menus and modals must not trap focus.
  • Contrast. We measure text and controls at AA level (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text and interface components) and propose fixes that stay as close to your brand colours as possible.
  • Forms and errors. Every field gets a programmatically associated label; errors are explained in text, not by colour alone, and reach screen readers.
  • Structure. Heading hierarchy, landmarks (header, nav, main, footer), link text and image alt text. We add ARIA only where plain HTML is not enough.
  • Skip link, zoom and reflow. We add a skip-to-content link and check the site holds up at 200% zoom and 320 px width without horizontal scrolling.
  • Fixes in code. We change theme templates, CSS and JavaScript, and where needed plugin output (for example through a child theme or a small filter). A backup is taken before any change.
  • Accessibility statement draft. A statement with the current status, known limitations and a feedback contact.

What we need from you

  • WordPress admin access and, if needed, server or FTP access.
  • Which pages and user journeys matter most (for example the checkout).
  • Whether design colours and fonts may change where contrast requires it.
  • A contact person who approves the final wording of the statement.

What is not included

  • Legal assessment or a declaration of compliance. We do not advise on whether your company must comply.
  • Changing the code of third-party services (for example a payment iframe) when they have their own defects. We report it and suggest alternatives.
  • Rewriting all content, such as video captions or making PDFs accessible. That is a separate job.
  • A new design. If the theme is fundamentally inaccessible, we suggest moving to a new theme.

The European Accessibility Act

The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025 to certain consumer products and services, including e-commerce. The technical reference is usually standard EN 301 549, which points to WCAG 2.1 AA. The exact obligation depends on your company size and sector, so that decision belongs to a lawyer. Our part is technical: bring the site as close to WCAG AA as practical and document it.

Who it suits

It suits online shops, service companies and organisations that want a site everyone can use, or need to show customers evidence of accessibility. If you also want a wider technical review, see the website audit. For ongoing care afterwards, there is website maintenance.

approx. 8 h Typical scope
50 € Hourly rate + VAT
400 € Estimated total

This is an estimate, not a quote. We’ll review your site free of charge first and tell you the exact time required. If the job turns out smaller, you pay less – we bill for the time actually spent.

How this job works

  1. Send an enquiry

Send us your site address and a couple of sentences about the problem. We usually reply the same or the next working day.

  2. We review it and give you the price

The assessment is free. You’ll know the exact time and price before you decide on anything.

  3. We do the work and report back

We take a backup before making changes. When the work is done you get a summary of exactly what was done and what to keep an eye on going forward.

Frequently asked questions

Is this legal advice?

No. We do technical work: audit and code fixes. If you need to know whether the European Accessibility Act applies to your business, ask a lawyer.

Will the site be fully WCAG compliant afterwards?

We bring the tested pages to AA level as far as your own code allows. Third-party widgets and new content can introduce new issues later, so we document known limitations.

Do you have to change our design?

Only where needed, for example when colour contrast is too low. We keep brand colours as close as possible and agree changes first.

Do you cover the WooCommerce checkout?

Yes. Cart, checkout and account pages are normally the most important journeys, so we test them first.

What does it cost and how long does it take?

We start with a free review and estimate and invoice actual time spent. Work usually begins within 1–3 working days.

We have worked with Birk for eight years now. This time we wanted a new website for the company, and the goals were set high from the very start – in visuals, functionality, manageability and SEO.
