Shopify is a popular e-commerce platform, but many business owners eventually consider moving to WordPress and WooCommerce. The step can look daunting, yet with the right approach the migration can be done smoothly and successfully. Below we look at why you might leave Shopify and what the process involves.

Why move away from Shopify?

1. Cost

Shopify can look affordable and convenient at first, but as your needs grow and you add more modules, costs can climb quickly. Every extra feature – more advanced product filtering, or a customer loyalty programme – can mean another monthly fee. With WooCommerce, most core functionality is free or available for a one-off payment.

2. Flexibility and development options

Shopify is a closed platform, which means development and customisation often has to go through their APIs or through paid Shopify experts. WooCommerce, as a WordPress extension, offers effectively unlimited development options. Want a unique design, complex payment integrations, or specialised third-party add-ons? WooCommerce allows all of it without a large additional spend.

3. Long-term cost control

Shopify’s monthly fees and limitations can work out more expensive than WooCommerce over time. With WordPress and WooCommerce you pay only for hosting, minor maintenance and development – which is particularly worthwhile as your shop grows.

The migration process

1. Choosing a server (hosting)

Good hosting is the foundation of a successful WooCommerce shop. It matters that you choose a provider with enough resources, fast load times and solid security. Popular options include Kinsta, SiteGround and WP Engine.

2. Choosing or building a design

Design plays a significant part in an online shop’s success. In WordPress you can choose a ready-made theme such as Astra or Flatsome, both optimised for WooCommerce. If your shop needs something more specific, a custom solution built exactly around your brand may be worth considering.

3. Moving products and data

Moving products from Shopify to WooCommerce is one of the most important steps. It covers product descriptions, images, categories and prices. Tools such as Cart2Cart, or Shopify’s CSV export and import, make the process considerably easier.

4. Recreating content pages

Beyond the products, all the other content pages need to move as well – “About us”, “Contact”, “Frequently asked questions” and “Privacy policy”. These pages make sure your customers can easily find everything they need on the new platform.

5. Configuring the shop

WooCommerce offers plenty of options for setting up shipping and payment methods. Local payment solutions such as Maksekeskus or Montonio can be integrated, and you can choose between different shipping modules to give your customers a range of options.

In summary

Moving from Shopify to WordPress and WooCommerce can be an excellent decision for a business that wants more flexibility and better cost efficiency in running its shop. Although the migration may look complicated at first, it is a manageable process with the right tools and the right partner. WooCommerce’s open source foundation also lets you build a genuinely distinctive, sustainable shop that grows with your needs.

This job typically takes around 14 hours, which works out at roughly 700 € + VAT. We’ll give you the exact price after a free assessment – and if the job turns out smaller, you pay less.

How quickly can you start?

We usually pick up smaller jobs within 1–3 working days. If your site is down or it’s a security incident, we start the same day – just say so when you write.

Yes, always. Before any change we take a copy of the files and the database, so it can be rolled back in seconds if needed.
