Google Search Console setup and fixing indexing errors

Google Search Console is the free tool that shows how Google sees your website: which pages are indexed, which are not, and why. On many WordPress sites it is either not set up at all, verified under a former contractor’s account, or full of red reports nobody has opened. The result is that some pages never reach search, others appear under the wrong URL, and the causes stay unknown.

In this job we set Search Console up properly, go through the reports one by one and fix on the WordPress side whatever Google is complaining about. At the end you get a short written summary: what was broken, what we fixed and what deserves another look in a few weeks.

What the work includes

Property verification. We create a domain property (DNS TXT record) or a URL-prefix property if DNS access is not available, tidy up old duplicate properties and add the right users.
XML sitemap. We check the sitemap generated by Rank Math or Yoast so that it lists only indexable pages and contains no 404s or redirects, then submit it in Search Console.
Indexing error fixes. We work through the Pages report: 404s, redirect chains, soft 404s, pages accidentally marked noindex, duplicate and conflicting canonical tags. For each finding we fix the cause, not just the symptom.
301 redirects. Changed or deleted URLs get permanent 301 redirects to the right destination so that old links and rankings are not lost.
Structured data. We check and, where needed, add schema.org JSON-LD markup for the organisation, products, articles and FAQs, and fix the errors and warnings shown in the rich results reports.
Core Web Vitals and mobile usability. We review which URLs are flagged as poor or needing improvement and tell you the cause. Larger speed work is a separate service.
Removing stray URLs. If the index contains a staging site, parameter URLs, internal search result pages or media attachment pages, we remove them and set rules so they do not come back.
GA4 connection. We link Search Console to your Google Analytics 4 property so that search queries and clicks also appear in Analytics reports.
Written summary. A short document: what was wrong, what we did, and which reports need another look in a few weeks.

Typical situations

Search Console is verified under a former developer’s or marketer’s account and nobody in the company has access. After a website redesign the report shows hundreds of “Not found (404)” errors because old URLs were never redirected. Rank Math and Yoast are both active and each submits its own sitemap. The staging environment is indexed and competes with the live site. A product page shows a “missing field price” or “offers” error in the rich results report because the theme overrides the WooCommerce schema.

Owner or full-user access to the existing Search Console property, or the Google account we should create the new property under.
Access to the domain’s DNS management (your hosting or Cloudflare panel) for domain verification.
WordPress administrator access and preferably SFTP or hosting panel access.
A list of recently changed URLs or the old site structure, if you have one.
Edit rights to the GA4 property if you want the Analytics link.

Who it suits

It suits a WordPress or WooCommerce site whose Search Console has never been set up, has been neglected or is full of errors nobody can interpret. It also fits right after a redesign, when you want to be sure Google sees the new site correctly. If you do not use Analytics yet, GA4 and Tag Manager setup is the natural companion.

Why pay for Search Console setup when the tool itself is free?

Google Search Console is free. Our work is the setup, the review of the reports and the fixes on the WordPress side; we start with a free review and estimate and bill the actual time spent.

How soon do the errors disappear from the reports after the fix?

We usually make the fixes within a few working days, but Google recrawls pages at its own pace. We start validation in the reports and errors typically clear within a few weeks; the summary tells you what to watch and when.

Rank Math or Yoast, which do you prefer?

Both handle the XML sitemap and schema markup well. We keep whichever your site already uses; if both are active, we keep one and carry the settings over.

Will this work push my site higher in Google?

Not directly. It makes sure Google finds and indexes the right pages without errors, which is the precondition for rankings. Content, keywords and links are the separate SEO service.

Do I need an existing Search Console property?

No. If there is none, we create one under your Google account. If one exists but belongs to a former partner, we help you verify ownership again under your own name.
