WordPress Staging Site and Safe Deployment Workflow

When a plugin is updated or a new feature is tried directly on the live site, every mistake is instantly visible to customers. Staging is a copy of the live site where changes can be checked calmly before they go public. We set it up to fit your hosting and way of working, so that moving changes across is repeatable rather than improvised by hand.

What the work includes

Staging copy. We create a copy of the live site on your hosting or on a subdomain (for example test.yourdomain.com), depending on what the host supports.
Search engines blocked. Staging is closed off: noindex, robots.txt and ideally password protection, so Google does not index duplicate content.
Database search-replace. URLs are swapped safely, taking serialised data into account (for example with the WP-CLI search-replace command), so theme and plugin settings do not break.
Pushing and pulling changes. We set up how code and updates move from staging to live, and how a fresh copy of live is pulled back into staging when needed.
Git for theme and plugin code. Custom theme and plugin code goes into version control, so every change is traceable and reversible.
WooCommerce caveats. We explain why the whole database must not be overwritten from staging to live: orders keep arriving on the live site. We decide what moves as code and what moves as data.
Payments and emails. On staging we disable live payments and customer emails, so testing does not send real order notifications.
Safe update routine. A written step-by-step procedure: backup, update on staging, test, update live, check afterwards.
Backup and rollback. We verify that a backup can actually be restored, and describe how to return to the previous state if something fails.

What we need from you

Hosting access (cPanel, Plesk or SSH) and WordPress admin access.
Whether your host offers a staging feature or a subdomain is needed.
Permission to change DNS for a subdomain, if required.
Who updates the site, so the routine matches how it is really used.

What is not included

Ongoing updates and monitoring. For that there is training or website maintenance.
Carrying out the updates and fixing their fallout. See WordPress and plugin updates.

A continuous automated CI/CD pipeline, unless ordered separately.

Who it suits

It suits online shops and businesses where the site earns money and every outage costs, and anyone with several people working on the site. For a small information site, the host’s staging button and a proper backup are often enough, and we will say so.

Frequently asked questions

Does staging cost extra hosting?

It depends on the host. Some include a staging feature in the plan; for others we create the copy on a subdomain within your existing space.

Will WooCommerce orders be lost on staging?

No, live orders stay intact. That is exactly why we do not overwrite the live database with staging; we move code and selected data instead.

Will Google index the staging site?

No. We block it with noindex and robots.txt and recommend password protection.

Is Git required?

No, but we recommend it for custom theme and plugin code, since it makes changes traceable and reversible.

What does it cost and when can you start?
